Current Season : Summer

There are very few things better in the world than Massena, NY during the summer. As school closes and the heat rises, the St. Lawrence River is a hotspot for many people from all around. From boat and kayak rentals to several beaches and marinas, if you are looking for a spot to relax the river is often calling your name. During the summer, several activities will keep everyone busy. In the morning there are several outdoor exercise programs that you can sign up for, during the day one can visit Hawkins Point and watch a free movie and enjoy some popcorn. You can also go visit one of the local beaches and cool off and enjoy some volleyball. Massena has several local restaurants that have outdoor dining for a nice evening snack or a late-night dinner. After dinner, it is time to take the family to Massena’s drive-in movie theater. There are only 28 in New York! For all nature lovers, one must stop the place to visit is Nicandri Nature Center. The Nature Center offers both indoor and outdoor activities for people of all ages. For those who may not love the outdoors, Massena has attractions for you as well. With several local shops that line the streets of downtown. Small clothing boutiques to jewelry stores, if you are a shopper that loves to find new exciting pieces, Massena downtown shopping is designed for you.

Fall

If you were to ask several local residents what their favorite season was in Massena, NY, fall would be the answer you would get. The leaves are starting to change, the weather is getting a little cooler, and the smell of baked apples and donuts fills the air. During this time of year, our local apple orchard opens and begins selling a variety of goodies for all ages. From apple cider donuts to fresh cider wine, Kanebs Orchards supplies it all. It is also a great afternoon trip for your family. With the accompaniment of live outdoor music, one can find themselves sipping apple cider slushies and eating one too many donuts. Another local attraction that can be visited during this time of year is Breezy Maples Farm. This is a fun afternoon spent with any family. Some services offer are daytime wagon rides, pony and horse rides, a farm play zone, bouncy houses, pumpkin picking, and when winter gets a little closer you can go find your perfect evergreen Christmas tree. Just like all the other seasons, the trails are opened and beautiful during any part of the day. The St. Lawrence River’s scenic view never gets old and the hustle of the summer activities slow down and it is a perfect time for a quiet canoe ride along the shore.

Winter

Just when the rest of the world may start entering into quiet hibernation, Massena, NY wakes up during the winter. Very little do you hear the more snow the better, but when snow falls in Massena, people begging to smile just a little bigger. With no seasonal shops or restaurants, you can enjoy everything all year round. The summer hiking trails turn into snowshoeing and cross country skiing adventures. If you don’t have the equipment go to the Nicandri Nature Center because it is available there for public use. The trails are gorgeous when the snow falls and with their knowledgeable staff, each explorer will get the full interactive experience. The colder it gets the harder the ice is. Nothing is better than lacing up some skates and enjoying an entire day at the rink. Skates are available at the Massena Hockey Arena and public skating is available every day! When the weather is nice and crisp there is an outdoor rink that is open to the public and free of charge. During wintertime in Massena, nothing is better than seeing snow-covered trees and fresh trails awaiting all explorers.

Spring

During springtime in Massena, the snowshoes and skis get put away along with the winter adventures, and hiking boots and springtime bucket lists are created.  Spring is the time of year where Massena begins to blossom again. Local greeneries start seeding for fresh fruits, vegetables, and gorgeous flowers and plants that will decorate downtown and residential houses throughout the town and villages. During the month’s March – June, there are several fun activities to do with a group of friends or your family. The St. Lawrence River will start seeing a lot more boat traffic and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Lock will be at the top of any visitors to-do list. For those who have been waiting inside for warmer weather will be happy to see golf courses starting to open along with outdoor dining at several restaurants located in the village and the town. For those looking to see a different perspective from their typical winter trail, go and visit the local nature center and see local animals and greenery come to life. With several different trails offered you can choose to explore deep within the woods to sunset walks along the St. Lawrence River. Summer is right around the corner and nothing is better than an ice cream treat and a car ride along the river watching the sun go down on our local paradise.
